A Q&A night will be held at Grosvenor Casino on 18th January with the famous British Super Middleweight boxer Michael Watson. The event will cost £45.00 and include a two course meal, a meet and greet and an auction.
Michael Watson, better known as ‘The Force’ was born in London on 15th March 1965. His boxing career started at the age of fourteen at the Crown and Manor Boxing Club and was soon boxing professionally. Watson won twenty-five out of his thirty fights, the highlight being his victory over Nigel Benn which secured him the British Commonwealth middleweight title.
Michael was forced in to early retirement following a near-fatal injury trying to defeat Chris Eubank in 1991, a rematch competing for WBO Superweight title. Watson was ahead in the 11th round but Eubank got him with an uppercut, Watson fell back causing his head to hit heavily on the ropes behind him. In the twelfth round thirteen million people tuned into ITV to see the referee stop the match after Michael had lost consciousness, due to no ambulances or paramedics being at the match it took eight minutes before Watson received any air or medical support and didn’t get to hospital until twenty eight minutes after he has collapsed. He then spent forty days in a coma and remained in intensive care for a year undergoing six brain operations to remove a blood clot and as if this wasn’t enough he spent a further six years in a wheelchair and slowly regained the ability to read and write.
After ‘The Force’ had recovered by 2003 he completed the London Marathon raising a substantial amount of money for the Brain and Spine Foundation, he went on to be awarded the MBE by the Queen at Buckingham Palace after she had heard about the traumas that he had gone through. More recently in 2012 he was announced the torchbearer for the Paralympic relay.
